What obligations from the apprentices?

Great blog post! It also gets the important message across that it's not exploitable labour. However, what are the commitments of the apprentice? We've had work experience people in the past that we have spent time training up and then they have decided (many hours of training later) that they would like to pursue a career in something else entirely, leaving us having wasted a lot of time and money! Are there obligations an apprentice must make too? - Jo

£2.60 an hour?!

Seriously - £2.60 an hour? I presume all apprentices travel to work by foot or bike as they obviously couldn't afford even the shortest local bus journey on that wage. I can't believe anyone would expect someone to work for such a pittance. - Ann Hawkins

Apprentices for telemarketing and office support

Fab post Katherine as always :)

Since it's National Apprenticeship Week it seems like a great time to talk about apprentices.

Apprentice schemes can be fantastic to recruit people who don't have baggage from previous employers and who can bring freshness into the business asking questions such as "why do you do that?" :)

One of my apprentices is now fully qualified and the other is only a few months away from completing her coursework and the whole experience has been excellent to the extent that I am now recruiting again for another apprentice.

In terms of their training their tutor actually comes here to my offices to do on the job training which means they don't even have to go to college and can start at any time rather than waiting for a college intake.

There is so much info around about Apprentices that it's nice to read your article to put key bits all in one place for anyone thinking of taking on an apprentice for the first time.
