The Keeping HR Simple Blog

A simple view of all things HR

Easier said than done?

Doing business in the Cambridge area can sometimes feel like mission impossible.   After all, there are lots of established businesses in the area already doing what we do.  And let’s face it, Cambridge is full of very clever people who are innovative and intelligent and start multi-million pound businesses before breakfast.  What would they want with a small HR consultancy like ours?

It’s all too easy to have an inferiority complex but that says more about us than it does about the people to whom we feel inferior!  They are just people when all’s said and done – people who employ people and may therefore need some HR support at some point

Inferiority complexes aside, I found that one of the easiest ways of getting our business known in the Cambridge area was to join the Cambridge Network.  There are various reasons why membership of this network is a good idea but in my opinion, these are the top three.

The news section

The front page of the Cambridge Network website gets updated every day with interesting news articles.  The editor (Judi Coe) does a fantastic job of wading through all the submitted articles and choosing which ones go on the front page.  She even gives advice on changes to articles to make them more interesting and newsworthy.

The jobs section

As part of your membership, you can post up to twenty jobs at a time.  It’s quick and easy to do and judging by the quality of candidates who apply, it’s well worth the membership fee!  I can honestly say that any time I’ve advertised a role via the Cambridge Network, I’ve always received applications from people who at least come close to meeting the specified criteria (which in itself is a bonus!).

The directory

All members have their profile listed in the directory.  There’s an A-Z list but you can also look at businesses by sector.  There’s a handy colour code for size of business too.  What more could you possibly ask for in a business directory?!

So, if you’re in the Cambridge area or even if you’re not but you want to do business in this area, get onto Cambridge Network straight away!  After all, where else could you share the front page with a story about James Caan from Dragon’s Den?!
